New Delhi, January 23 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the national capital today, predicting light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. The change in weather is expected to bring a welcome respite to Delhiites after days of poor air quality and chilly mornings.
According to IMD officials rain showers are likely to continue throughout the day, with wind speeds reaching 25–35 km/h in several parts of the city. The sudden shift in weather conditions is due to a western disturbance passing over North India, which has led to moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea moving toward the plains.
The rainfall has already started showing positive effects on Delhi’s air quality, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) improving from ‘Very Poor’ to ‘Moderate’ in many monitoring zones. Experts say that the rainfall will help settle dust particles and pollutants suspended in the air, providing a short-term improvement in air conditions.
However, IMD has cautioned residents to stay alert as the combination of rain and wind may cause traffic congestion and visibility issues, especially during morning and evening rush hours. Citizens have been advised to carry umbrellas and plan their commutes accordingly.
The minimum temperature is expected to hover around 11°C, while the maximum may not exceed 19°C due to cloud cover. Meteorologists predict that clearer skies will return by the weekend, bringing back the winter chill once the rain subsides.
Environmental experts have also noted that consistent rainfall during this season can play a crucial role in improving Delhi’s air quality index, which typically worsens due to vehicular emissions and crop residue burning in neighboring states.
For now, Delhiites can look forward to a pleasant, rain-washed day, with a sigh of relief from the pollution that has plagued the city in recent weeks. EEST TV
