How it works

Adding GST: tax = amount × rate ÷ 100

Removing GST: base price = inclusive price × 100 ÷ (100 + rate)

Within a state the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST; between states it is charged as IGST. The rate depends on the goods or service (its HSN or SAC code); check the official rate schedule before you invoice.

Questions readers ask

What are the GST slabs now?
Since 22 September 2025 the main slabs are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40% (luxury and sin goods), after the 12% and 28% slabs were largely removed. Special rates such as 3% on gold continue.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100). For ₹1,180 including 18% GST: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base price and ₹180 GST.
When is IGST charged instead of CGST and SGST?
IGST applies to supplies between two states (and imports). Within one state the same total is split equally into CGST and SGST.
