eSanjeevani Crosses 50 Crore Teleconsultations as Government Telemedicine Adds AI and AIIMS Specialists

India's national telemedicine service eSanjeevani has crossed 50 crore consultations. It handles 2.5 to 3 lakh a day in 15 languages, has added an AI decision-support system and is starting specialist consultations from three AIIMS.

NEW DELHI: eSanjeevani, India's national telemedicine service, has crossed 50 crore teleconsultations, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said, according to an All India Radio report on October 6. The ministry said "the achievement reflects the growing role of telemedicine in complementing the country's existing healthcare delivery system."

The figure is cumulative, across all States and Union Territories, since the service began. The ministry describes eSanjeevani as the world's largest telemedicine implementation in primary healthcare.

From 43 crore to 50 crore

eSanjeevani was launched in November 2019 as a provider-to-provider service, in which a health worker at a local centre connects a patient with a doctor at a hub, and in April 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, it added direct patient-to-doctor consultations, Digital Health News reported. Health Minister Prataprao Jadhav told Parliament that the service, which operates in all 28 states and eight Union Territories, had passed 43 crore consultations as of November 23, 2025, which means about 7 crore more have been added since then. Citizens without a phone or computer can use the service from a nearby health centre.

The platform is linked to the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. "eSanjeevani is aligned with key building blocks of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, such as Healthcare Professionals Registry, Health Facility Registry, ABHA integration, and interoperable electronic health records," Jadhav said.

How it works

eSanjeevani connects patients at local health centres with doctors at hubs. It currently supports more than 1.42 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandir spokes and more than 19,000 medical hubs, along with 901 online OPDs. More than two lakh healthcare providers are registered on the platform.

The service handles about 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh consultations every day in 15 languages, English and 14 Indian languages. Its highest single-day use has crossed six lakh consultations.

The ministry said the platform had extended public healthcare beyond the physical boundaries of hospitals and clinics, bringing consultations closer to the communities where people live.

Who uses it

Women account for more than 57 per cent of all use, according to the ministry. Forty per cent of consultations are by people aged 46 and above, including 16.25 per cent by senior citizens aged 60 and above.

AI in the consultation

The platform now includes an Artificial Intelligence-powered Clinical Decision Support System, AI-CDSS, which supports doctors during consultations and is meant to improve the quality, consistency and efficiency of clinical decisions. The system won the Gold Award under the National Awards for e-Governance 2026.

eSanjeevani has also been integrated with the Emergency Response Support System, 112, linking emergency response services with remote medical expertise.

Specialists from AIIMS

The service is now expanding into specialist outpatient consultations through leading government medical institutions. Patient-to-doctor teleconsultations for selected specialities have begun at AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Jammu and AIIMS Patna.

Made in India

eSanjeevani was developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, C-DAC, with C-DAC Mohali providing the technology development and engineering support since the start. The Health Ministry has guided the platform's development as the needs of the health system have changed, the report said.

At the current rate of 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh consultations a day, the platform handles between about 9 crore and 11 crore consultations a year. The ministry did not say how many of the 50 crore consultations were between patients and doctors directly, as opposed to through a health worker at a local centre, or how follow-up care is tracked.

The ministry said the platform has become an important part of the country's digital health ecosystem.
